There was a time when most clubs would take a trophy as opposed to avoiding relegation, but in the money driven world of football these days, winning trophy's doesn't seem to matter anymore.
Teams now put reserve sides out in the FA and league cups in order to consolidate their position in the league, and even the media class finishing a distant 3rd, 4th, 5th (or even 17th for a newly promoted club) in the league as a greater feat than winning a cup.
Look at Villa. They entered the Uefa cup through the back door then (even though they had a genuine chance of winning it) proceeded to play reserve sides so they could possibly finish 4th in the league. They got knocked out and for their reward have finished in a position to re-enter the same tournament that they didn't take seriously in the first place!
Money is tearing the heart out of football...
